Summerlin Hospital Medical Center Forges Partnership with Age-Qualified Siena
Oct 15, 2000
Summerlin Hospital Medical Center will have a wellness center at the age-qualified, Mediterranean-themed village of Siena. The hospital’s presence in the community’s Health and Fitness Center, slated to open next month, will be celebrated with a street fair, “Healthy Living at Siena, A Wellness Festival” on Sunday, October 22, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the model village. “Siena is proud to become partners with this outstanding medical organization in promoting a healthy lifestyle for the people of our community,” said Siena senior vice president and project manager Paul Smith. “The wellness center in our health and fitness facility will also give residents on-site access to the hospital’s acclaimed Senior Advantage Program.” “We are looking forward to the opening of the Wellness Center this winter,” said KD. Justyn, CEO and managing director of Summerlin Hospital Medical Center. “It will provide us with the wonderful opportunity to meet the residents of Siena and partner with them in their health education needs through resources such as health seminars, screenings and literature.” The day-long health festival next Sunday will provide free hearing exams, osteoporosis screenings, foot exams by podiatrist Dr. Randy Gubler, and blood pressure and pulse screenings. Chem Panel and Complete Blood Count (CBC) screenings, to be given at the much-reduced cost of $10, will measure more than 20 blood chemistries including heart, kidney and liver function, as well as cholesterol and glucose levels. The CBC also gives a complete breakdown of the blood’s red and white cells and can be an indicator of anemia, vitamin deficiencies or infection. Results will be mailed within a week. An afternoon of free wellness seminars and demonstrations will include “Therapeutic Exercises for Seniors” by licensed physical therapists at 11:15; “Healthy Aging” by internist Dr. Ashley Kelley at 12 noon; “New Technologies in Managing Heart Disease” by cardiologist Dr. Chandrasekhar Narala at 12:45 p.m.; “New Treatments for Aching Feet and Ankles” by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Gary Morris at 1:30 p.m.; “Early Detection and Treatment of Breast Cancer” by Oncologist Dr. Farzaneh Farzin at 2:15 p.m. (October is National Breast Health Month); and “Women’s Health” by family practitioner Dr. Amy Sparks at 3 p.m. Free massages will be given by Destination Salon and Spa, which will also be located in the Siena Health and Fitness Center. The spa will offer a wide variety of therapeutic massages, including Swedish, Shiatsu, deep tissue/sports therapy, as well as reflexology. Natural body treatments will include mineral or herbal body wraps and aromatherapy. There will exhibit booths at the festival featuring running and walking shoes, vitamins, health foods, and new medical technologies. Summerlin Hospital Medical Center staff will demonstrate the revolutionary Heart Card by Cardiomedics, Inc., a credit-card-sized portable heart monitor. Samples of heart-healthy menu items from the Siena Grille will also be available at several food stations along the Siena model village’s cobblestone path. The menu includes roasted pork tenderloin, turkey with portabella mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes, wild rice with pecans, roasted baby carrots, a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and salads, and assorted whole-grain breads. “The Italians say good eating is essential to health and happiness. That’s our philosophy at Siena too,” said Smith. “These foods are not only heart-healthy, they are hearty and delicious.” In addition to the wellness center, Siena’s 15,900-square-foot Health and Fitness Center will have a cardiovascular and weight room, saunas, steam rooms, and an indoor lap pool. It has an 18-hole championship golf course and will soon have lighted tennis courts, bocce ball courts, and swimming pools. There will be a full-time fitness director, in addition to the full-time activities manager, Kristyne Blake. The heart of the village will be a nearly 40,000-square-foot community center with arts and crafts facilities, a ballroom and theater, card and billiards rooms, and a computer and business center. Towering palm trees line the private road leading to Siena’s guard-gated entrance. Bordered on the north by West Flamingo Road, on the east by Hualapai Way, on the west by Town Center Drive, and on the south near Russell Road, Siena has pushed the Summerlin boundary to its southwestern edge. To reach the Siena model village, take Sahara Avenue west and turn left on Town Center Drive. Proceed two and one-half miles south, past Desert Inn Road, and follow the Siena signs. Models are open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily.
